The Home Oxygen Service (HOS) delivers oxygen to patients in their homes either through cylinders, oxygen concentrators or liquid oxygen systems. The service is commissioned by Primary Care Trusts and is currently provided entirely by the Independent Sector. The service is split between ten contracts roughly aligned to SHA boundaries, and an eleventh covering Wales. All contracts are managed by PCTs with oversight of Providers by the Central Contract Management Unit (CCMU) of the Department of Health’s (DH) Commercial Directorate (CD).The majority of contracts are due for renewal in 2011.
The one exception is the contract for the South West region, which is due for renewal on 1 April 2008. A new procurement has been proposed for the region.
