This guidance recommends (a)that purchasers of health care include enhanced surveillance, prevention and control in their contractual requirements, (b) routine surveillance of hospital acquired infection, including non outbreak associated infection, (c) arrangements for the control of outbreaks of infection in hospitals, and (d) the action which should be taken by the hospital in response to major outbreaks of infection in the community.
