This letter from the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer and the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer describes the 2005 Influenza immunisation campaign.

In summary:

  • Two additional groups have been added to those recommended to receive flu immunisation (1) people with chronic liver disease, and (2) people who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill.
  • General practitioners are encouraged to improve on last year's uptake for those aged 65 years and over and those in 'at risk' groups under 65 years of age
  • As last year, a national publicity campaign will be launched in early October
  • Primary care trusts will again receive financial support for running the influenza programme. This will be paid in autumn
  • Details of the immunisation programme are attached in the Annex.
