This is the first attempt to make use of local inspection reports to connect findings on different inspection topics. It originated in the recognition that standards relating to the abuse of older people, both in their own homes and in residential settings, had been used in a range of inspections since 1994. The overall aim of the study was to examine the evidence about responses to the problem of elder abuse, as presented in local SSI reports. Prevention of abuse, as the government has recognised, should be the priority of policy. These SSI reports point helpfully in the direction of different interventions and shows clearly that good practice in different areas of activity is the key resource for the prevention of abuse.
