In-patients formally detained in hospitals under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation, England: summary statistics

This Statistical Bulletin presents information on uses of the Mental Health Act 1983 in NHS hospitals, including the three high security psychiatric hospitals, and in independent hospitals as defined in the Care Standards Act 2000 (previously private mental nursing homes registered to detain patients in England). The Bulletin shows trends in admissions to hospital under the Act; admissions are analysed by sex, section of the Act under which patients were detained and category of disorder. There are also statistics on changes in legal status of patients already held under the Act, changes to formal detention of those already in hospital as informal patients and information on the number of patients detained on a single day.
