The national conference From Ideas to Action: Improving Chronic Disease Management had several key speakers including national clinical director for diabetes Dr Sue Roberts.
She argued that a systematic approach to chronic care in the UK could be successfully combined with a patient-centred ethos.
National director for patients and the public Harry Cayton emphasised the need to help chronically ill patients take greater control of their lives.
The World Health Organisation's director for management of chronic diseases Dr Rafael Bengoa offered some global perspectives on chronic disease trends, while John Hopkins University's (USA) Better Lives for People with Chronic Conditions project national director Gerard Anderson highlighted the importance of dealing with multiple chronic conditions.
