GPs and the White Paper

GPs will be represented on a new, national working group set up to help deliver some of the key policies outlined in the White Paper 'Our health, our care, our say: a new direction for community services'.

The Care Closer to Home Demonstration Group (CCHDG), chaired by health minister Lord Warner, will comprise representatives of the royal colleges of GPs, physicians, surgeons and nursing, plus the British Medical Association and NHS Confederation.

It will examine ways to provide care closer to home for people in six specialities:

  • ear, nose and throat
  • trauma and orthopaedics
  • dermatology
  • urology
  • gynaecology
  • general surgery.

Over the next 12 months the CCHDG will work with six specialty sub-groups to define models of care which can be safely adopted by health professionals nationwide.

The sites will be selected by PCTs and specialist sub-groups made up of GPs and other clinicians.
