The Department of Health is asking PCTs to draft action plans to improve the cost-effectiveness and performance of their out-of-hours services.
National Audit Office (NAO) figures show that there is scope to reduce the costs of out-of-hours provision by more than £100 million per year without affecting the quality of service. The department is working with the NAO to revise the model contract guidance to help reduce commissioning inconsistencies.
