GPs will have a duty to consult the new Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) service, which is being introduced to help people with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or severe learning disabilities make decisions about medical treatment.
The IMCA scheme, introduced as part of the 2005 'Mental Capacity Act', will be implemented from April 2007.
