The number of full-time equivalent (FTE) GPs grew by an average of 1.1 per cent a year between 1995 and 2005, according to the latest annual NHS workforce census.
Between 1995 and 2005, the number of FTE GPs rose by more than 3,000 to 29,248 and the number of FTE practice nurses increased from 9,745 to 13,793. Single-handed GP practices decreased from 2,919 to 2,285.
