Training structures

As detailed in the last bulletin, the seven regional training boards (RTBs) are now all set up and operational. The board leadership programme run by the Kings Fund, provides a similar service in London. All RTBs have had several meetings to discuss the training needs for their local areas. Several regional events have already taken place with more scheduled to start in April. Details of these events will be distributed as they arise.

Induction

Four more of our successful non-executive induction events are scheduled to take place in February in Cambridge, Leeds, Cheltenham and Gatwick. These are for newly-appointed chairs and non-executives and cover a wide range of topics including finance, patient and public involvement (PPI), primary care, mental health and the public health agenda.

In December we had our first new chairs induction events. These are very interactive with an average of five delegates at each. This approach was extremely well received and covered a wide range of topics, including the role of the chair and board, team building, communications and appraisal training.

Another event will be held at the end of March. New chairs should note that these events supplement the non-executive induction events which they may also attend.

Finance training

Another 700 subsidised places have been purchased from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HfMA), with the popular course Not just money and numbers being repeated. A training brochure and booking form was sent out to all non-executives by the association at the end of December.

The new version of the HfMA finance book has also been purchased and will be distributed to chairs of audit committees and newly appointed non-executives.

Some networking events for audit committee chairs are also being planned.

These will start in March and be arranged by the regional training facilitators.

Patient and public involvement (PPI)

Following the two large PPI awareness conferences in December feedback suggested more information was needed locally. The regional training facilitators are planning an event in each region to cover all the questions raised at the conferences. These should start in April.

Training take up

During 2003 about 4,000 people attended events organised or facilitated by the commission. We hope the 2004 programme will be even more attractive.
