1. Smoke free regulations and mental health trusts (Gateway reference number: 7783)

Louis Appleby, National Director for Mental Health, has written to all SHA and mental health trust chief executives. From 1 July 2008, the Government has proposed that smoking will be against the law in any enclosed or substantially enclosed part of any mental health establishment. See:

2. Consultation on the hospital travel costs scheme (Gateway reference number: 7026)

The hospital travel costs scheme looks at reimbursing patients and raising awareness. The scheme supports low income patients access non-primary care services. It is therefore relevant to staff working in finance, health inequalities, patient and public involvement, communications, and equality and diversity. See:

3. A recipe for care – Not a single ingredient: Clinical case for change (Gateway reference number: 7768)

In this third report issued by national clinical directors outlining the case for reconfiguring services, Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People says a new approach which brings services closer to home will make a big difference to older people and their families. See:

4. 18 weeks - Good practice pathways (Gateway reference number: 7784)

The 18 weeks team have developed good practice, high-level, service focused pathways for the highest volume specialties, to support commissioners in developing local service models. Ten pathways are available on the 18 weeks website at: 

5. Andy Burnham's Staff Shadowing Report (Gateway reference number: 7786)

Health minister Andy Burnham spent seven days shadowing different NHS staff to gain a better understanding of what it is like to work in the NHS. Today he publishes a report of what he found and his suggestions on better engaging with staff.  See:

Conferences and Events - i) what’s new

6. Our health, our care, our say White Paper – One year on (Gateway reference number: 7769)

Our health, our care, our say set out a significant shift in the way care is delivered, to a community based, responsive, flexible service centred around the individual. One year on from publication, this free summit on 19 March in London aims to share progress and learning and to accelerate local implementation. We are asking that each SHA chief executive and regional Association of Directors of Social Services representative work jointly to nominate a party of 15 people from their SHA or region by 8 February 2007.

7. Respect showcase (Gateway reference number: 7770)

This event is re-scheduled from October 2006 and will explore how the NHS can engage with the Respect agenda to deliver improved health outcomes. Health Minister Caroline Flint, is expected to deliver the keynote speech at the event on 8 March 2007.
