Consultations and evaluations

1. Consultation on the new national stroke strategy (Gateway reference number: 8407)

Outlines proposals for how services must co-ordinate a new strategy to prevent and treat stroke. Six working groups, including people with stroke, carers, doctors and social care workers, give advice on issues such as quick access to the right treatment, improving home support and setting up clinical networks.

Action: Give your views on the ideas in the document and contribute to the general debate. The closing date for responses is 12 October 2007.

2. Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer 2006: On the State of Public Health (Gateway reference number: 8556)

The need to improve hand hygiene in hospitals is highlighted and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) urges chief executives to ensure this is a first priority for patient safety. Changing to an opt-out system for organ donation is also recommended. Further topics are radiography, infant deaths and women in medicine.

Action: Review report and consider how to implement the recommendations in your organisations.
