This document details a programme of children's services inspections carried out by the SSI in 32 local councils between August 2000 and July 2001 to see how they were progressing. It was found that councils generally needed to give continued attention to providing basic services well and to ensuring that they had strategies in place to achieve new approaches to delivering services.
