At any one time about one in six adults experience mental health difficulties for which they seek help outside the family. For a proportion of people hospital admission and treatment are appropriate. Some of those treated in hospital are compulsorily detained under the provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983. This report is based on inspections in ten council areas to assess the service recieved by and outcomes for users who are compulsorily detained.
