Earlier this year (2008), in negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, the Department reached agreement on key components of a new Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme, which should deliver significant savings in the NHS drugs bill from next year. However, negotiations on the detail continue and identifying gaps in information on medicines expenditure in secondary care (in particular information on medicines dispensed at home where purchasing sometimes bypasses pharmacy information systems) is crucial to this exercise.

This letter from David Nicholson to NHS Trusts seeking support in identifying these gaps.
