The Government has written to the European Commission to seek a limited derogation from the Working Time Directive (EWTD) for an extra four hours per week, to 52 hours, that could be applied to doctors in training working in hospital services delivering 24-hour immediate care, post 1 August 2009. This letter sets out the detailed process to identify the specific services and rotas where a case for derogation can be made.
