In April 2003 the Welsh Assembly Government took transfer of funding for prison health services in the public sector prisons in Wales from the Home Office. For the time being the Welsh Assembly is effectively commissioning health services for prisoners from the Prison Service, but in due course the Assembly will be devolving the commissioning responsibility to NHS organisations. The following is a briefing on developments to date in Wales.
