In 2000, Mental Health Trusts were instructed to take steps to remove all non-collapsible bed and shower curtain rails in psychiatric In-patient settings by 2005. Any that have not done so must do so immediately. Once installed, ensure regular maintenance checks and load tests are carried out according to manufacturer's instructions. Identify any risks associated with other potential ligature points e.g windows, coat hooks, door closures, suspended ceiling tracks etc. Take appropriate action, where necessary, to remove or neutralise the risk.
