This health service circular was superseded by the NHS Employers guidance, Safer recruitment: a guide for NHS employers, in May 2005.
This Circular brought together various elements of good practice relating to the checks required before an NHS body appoints a person, whether as an employee, volunteer or by hiring a person's services, and should be seen as complementing good appointment practice, and as one part of that overall process. It has been supplemented by temporary guidance issued with the Chief Executives Bulletin on 12 September 2002.
