The Sex Offenders Act 1997, which will come into force on 1 September 1997, imposes requirements on sex offenders, including those under 18, to notify the police of their name and address and any subsequent changes to these. The purpose is to ensure that information on sex offenders contained within the Police National Computer is fully up to date. The requirements affect people who are subject to the terms of a sentence on 1 September 1997 having been convicted' and to those who are subsequently convicted, or formally cautioned for a relevant offence.
