The Report shows the maternal mortality rate from conditions directly due to pregnancy (Direct deaths) has fallen for the first time in ten years to 5.5 deaths per 100,000 maternities from 6.0 per 100,000 for the preceding two triennia.
The report provides an overview of trends in reproductive epidemiology, and discusses deaths from hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, and from antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage. Thrombosis and amniotic fluid embolism as causes of death are discussed. Also reported on are deaths in early pregnancy, those occurring as a result of genital tract sepsis and trauma, and relating to anaesthesia. Deaths from indirect causes - cardiac disease, Caesarean section, suicide and substance misuse are also included. Issues relating to pathology, intensive care, and substandard care are discussed.
