Summary of the 60th meeting of the Chief Medical Officer's Expert Advisory Group On Aids (EAGA)

The Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (EAGA) held its 60th meeting on 2 March 1999. At that meeting the following items were discussed:
Report on the work of the UKAP
EAGA was updated on the HIV/AIDS related work of the UK Advisory Panel for Health Care Workers infected with Blood-borne Viruses.
Antenatal HIV testing and measures to reduce vertical transmission
EAGA considered a paper on Antenatal HIV testing for the National Screening Committee and a report from the EAGA Working Group on prevention of vertical, (mother to child), transmission of HIV. The Group agreed a final draft of guidelines on HIV transmission and Infant Feeding.
HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
EAGA was informed of progress with the new EAGA Working Group on HIV PEP set up to review the advice and recommendations in the current EAGA HIV PEP guidelines issued in 1997
HIV transmission and oral sex
The Group considered their Working Group's review of the evidence on HIV transmission associated with oral sex, and recommended how their advice on this subject should be further developed.
HIV adverse drug reactions reporting scheme
The Group received a report on progress of the Medicine Control Agency's HIV Adverse Drug Reactions Reporting Scheme.
Guidelines for the prevention and control of BBV infection in renal dialysis and renal transplantation units
EAGA commented on draft guidelines for the prevention and control of BBV infection in renal dialysis and renal transplantation units.

- Terms of Reference of the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS:
The Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (EAGA) is a non-departmental public body which is non-statutory. It was established in 1985 "To provide advice on such matters relating to AIDS as may be referred to it by the Chief Medical Officers of the Health Departments of the United Kingdom". The Group meets three times a year and there have been 58 meetings to date. It currently has 18 members. Fixed terms of office are for four years and no member should serve more than two four year terms. The Group has agreed to publish summary reports of meetings in the interests of openness and transparency.
