'I am delighted that such committed and experienced individuals will now be working together to help the NHS implement change in pathology services.
'The National Pathology Modernisation Group will be chaired by our recently appointed National Pathology Adviser, Dr Ian Barnes, and will build upon Modernising Pathology Services, supporting the NHS in delivering the 21st century pathology services that patients want and need.'
The Group's inaugural meeting will be on 2 September 2004. It will then meet every three months.
2. Modernising Pathology Services was published in February this year. It is good practice advice to the NHS that sets out steps that can be taken locally to develop pathology modernisation strategies. It also describes action that will be taken nationally to support developments. The document builds upon responses received to the consultation document Pathology - The Essential Service - Draft Guidance on Modernising Pathology Services.
3. £9.1m revenue and £54m capital will support pathology modernisation over the period 2003/04 to 2005/06.
