To look at how far SSDs had come in developing services responsive to individual needs and which offer choice for adults with learning disabilities, the Social Services Inspectorate (SSI) inspected eight SSDs across England during 1997. The SSI inspection teams, which included health managers and lay assessors, assessed SSDs against the standards and criteria presented in Appendix A. Separate reports have been published on individual departments. This report provides an overview of the findings of all eight inspections and includes some checklists to help improve services further.
