Hepatitis C is now recognised as an important public health problem world-wide and the World Health Organisation estimates that some 170 million people are chronically infected. In England, the number of people chronically infected with hepatitis C is estimated to be around 200,000, the majority of whom are currently unaware of their infection. The hepatitis C strategy main aims are to prevent new cases of hepatitis C infection, identify those who are chronically infected by increasing testing for hepatitis C and to offer specialist advice and appropriate treatment via co-ordinated pathways of patient care.
