This guidance covers optical charges in the Hospital Eye Service (HES) and replaces existing guidance, in particular HC(89)12, on charges for HES patients who require sight tests and/or optical appliances.

  

This guidance is for action by NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and for information for NHS Foundation Trusts.

PCTs should have regard to this guidance when contracting with Foundation Trusts.

This document replaces any previous guidance, in particular HC(89)12, on charges for HES patients who require sight tests and/or optical appliances.

Patients of the HES can be:

(i) Receiving eye care from an NHS hospital or clinic as either an in-patient or outpatient; 

(ii) An NHS hospital in-patient admitted for non-ophthalmic reasons who needs eye care.
