Professor Sir Ara Darzi – national advisor on surgery – makes the clinical case for change in the NHS from a surgical perspective. In particular, he argues that patients will only fully benefit for advances in surgical technology in a redesigned service, where local centres carry out around 80 per cent of surgery, with the remaining 20 per cent of planned surgery being carried out in specialised centres.
