In 2005/06, the Pathology Modernisation programme funded six action learning sets to address a range of topics which were identified as priorities for pathology services nationally.  The learning sets worked on workforce development and re-profiling; standardisation of reference intervals; a protocol for patient identification wristbands; improving primary care diagnostics, and network development.

Modernising from within: action learning solutions for pathology shares the learning from those projects and the outcomes of the learning sets' work, and also includes an excellent introduction to the technique of action learning. It will be a valuable resource for others in the pathology community who face similar issues, both for specifics such as the methodology for standardising reference intervals, and also more general aspects of using action learning to improve pathology services. Action learning has proved an effective tool in addressing problems which do not have an obvious solution.
