Dame Denise Platt, in her review into the status of social care for the Minister for Care Services, made five recommendations. One of these was that a skills academy be established for social care to focus on leadership, management and commissioning skills.

In response to her report, the Minister for Care Services has set out a five point plan for establishing world class social care. The centrepiece of this plan is the proposal to establish a skills academy, building on the earlier work by Skills for Care.

The Department of Health prepared this statement of vision and purpose following a stakeholder workshop. The statement sets out initial thinking on what a skills academy for social care would do and the proposed timetable and methodology for developing the skills academy.
