Safer management of controlled drugs: a guide to good practice in secondary care (England). October 2007

This document promotes the safe and effective use of controlled drugs in healthcare organisations providing secondary care. First issued in May 2007, the guidance has been updated to reflect amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 made in July 2007.

 Specifically the following updates to the guidance have been included:

  • Authority for ODPs to possess and supply CDs - Chapters 4, 5 and 6 - references updated throughout these chapters
  • Record keeping requirements updated - Chapter 7.6
  • Accountable Officers authority to appoint witnesses to the destruction of CDs -  Chapter 7.15
  • earlier clarification note issued on 4.10.2.1 (prescribing of controlled drugs by medical doctors who have not achieved full registration with the GMC) now incorporated
