NICE 18th Work programme: clinical guidelines and public health guidance referred in March 2008

Department of Health Ministers have referred the following topics to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for the production of clinical guidelines and public health guidance.

NICE will begin consultation on these in due course and details will be made available on the NICE website at:

Clinical guidelines

Sedation in young people
To prepare a clinical guideline on sedation for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in infants, children and young people up to the age of 19

Fractured neck of femur
To prepare a clinical guideline on the management of fractured neck of femur

Short clinical guideline

Human donor breast milk
To produce a short clinical guideline on the use of human donor breast milk in preterm babies

Public health programme guidance

Contraceptive services for socially disadvantaged young people
To produce programme guidance for the NHS on the provision of contraceptive services in appropriate settings for socially disadvantaged young people (up to the age of twenty five)

Public health intervention guidance

Prevention of skin cancer
To produce intervention guidance for the NHS on the provision of information for the general public on the prevention of skin cancer

Prevention of uptake of smoking in children
To produce intervention guidance for local authorities and primary care on school based prevention of the uptake of smoking in children

Reduction of infant mortality
To produce intervention guidance for midwives, health visitors, general practitioners and antenatal care services on the reduction of infant mortality in children of women in disadvantaged circumstances under the age of twenty

Prevention of excess weight gain during pregnancy
To produce intervention guidance for general practitioners, midwives and the ante natal services on the prevention of excessive weight gain in pregnancy

Weight maintenance following childbirth
To produce intervention guidance for primary care on effective weight maintenance following childbirth

Reduction of accidental injuries on the road
To produce guidance on public health interventions to reduce accidental injuries to persons under the age of fifteen on the road

Reduction of accidental injuries in the home
To produce guidance on public health interventions to reduce accidental injuries to persons under the age of fifteen in the home
