  • High-level azithromycin resistance has emerged in Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Laboratories and NHS Trusts should be alert to this problem and test gonococci for azithromycin resistance.
  • Resistant isolates should be referred to the Sexually Transmitted Bacteria Reference Laboratory for confirmation.
  • An outbreak of this highly resistant strain may be ongoing in North West England (and Wales)
