This document explores the background and context of domestic violence and section two gives facts and figures on its prevalence and nature. The role of the health professional in recognising domestic violence and the action to be taken following disclosure is then considered. It focuses on the importance of multi-agency collaboration, highlighting the value of local domestic violence forums to co-ordinate the work of key agencies and professional groups. The implications for education and training of NHS staff addressing the underlying causes of domestic violence are also considered. Appendices provide details on the legal framework pertaining to domestic violence and list national agencies involved in domestic violence and sources of further information.
