The aim of this consultation (closed April 2000) was to seek views on ways to achieve better health outcomes for children and young people in local authority care; there is evidence that they have greater levels of health need than their peers, yet are less likely to receive adequate healthcare.
The Quality Protects programme to transform children's services - which places particular emphasis on placement stability and improving the quality of care - provides real opportunities to promote health for looked after children. Properly integrated, accessible and responsive health services (including mental health and health promotion) are vital to improving individual quality of life for looked after children and young people, and will help to reduce social exclusion.
