This report comprises the findings of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness. It is based on information received by the Inquiry between 1996 and 2001 and includes data for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The report begins with a summary of key statistical findings on suicide and homicide together with a summary of the Inquiry's main recommendations. Information is presented on the Inquiry's methodology and objectives, followed by detailed chapters on suicide and homicide. Detailed, statistical information is provided in both areas. Data covers the demographic, diagnostic, social and clinical characteristics of people who die by suicide or commit homicide. Much of the data is summarised in tables and graphs with supporting textual commentary. The Inquiry re-visits the recommendations of the previous review, 'Safer Services', and notes progress to date. Finally, it presents 18 recommendations for improved practice. Cites four references.
