After a brief explanation of how to use the directory, there are discussions on how to identify the most appropriate method of communication training for different types of personal social services staff, and what the various sorts of training involve. Staff are broken down into three groups: frontline staff; non-specialist staff working with deaf people on a regular basis; and specialist workers with deaf people, and the training needs of each group are discussed. The two main types of training described are deaf and deafblind awareness training, and British sign language. Qualifications and general information about the content of training courses is given in the next section. The main body of the directory follows, containing names and addresses of institutions country-wide running deaf awareness and communication training, and the individual courses they offer.
