In October 1997, the UK Health Ministers asked the Clinical Standards Advisory Group (CSAG) to review epilepsy services and make recommendations that would improve standards of clinical care provided by the NHS for people with epilepsy. The CSAG set up a multi-professional committee, and the research took place between November 1997 and June 1999. This report looks at the background to the study and discusses the epidemiology and characteristics of epilepsy. The methods used in the study are outlined and both patients' and clinicians' perspectives on services for epilepsy are reported. The study also explored the provision of general neurology services in the UK and how they relate to epilepsy care and nine specific areas that are pertinent to the provision of epilepsy care are identified. Finally, the basis for commissioning epilepsy services is restated and several recommendations are made. Cites numerous references.
