This guidance is for use by NHS trusts, primary care trusts and strategic health authorities when making appointments to consultant posts. It provides good practice guidance on the NHS (Appointment of Consultants) Regulations 1996, as amended. (S.I. 1996/701 as amended by S.I. 2002/2469, S.I. 2003/1250, S.I. 2004/696 and S.I. 2004/3365.) The 1996 Regulations and subsequent amendments do not apply to NHS Foundation Trusts although they can follow this guidance when appointing to a consultant post if they so choose
