The centrally funded GP Golden Hello Scheme (GHS), which began in 2001, closed on 1 April 2005. The Primary Care Development Scheme has been developed to provide additional support and funding targeted at those areas that have the greatest recruitment difficulties in general practice.
Difficulties in the recruitment of GPs show a positive correlation to health inequalities. In addressing these recruitment problems, the scheme should focus on disadvantaged areas with high needs.
The allow for optimum targeting, the identification of areas with difficulties in GP recruitment and the way that support is provided will be left to local discretion, using local knowledge, and the principles contained in the framework for the Primary Care Development Scheme.
This framework is accompanied by a letter from Debbie Mellor, Head of Workforce Capacity, notifying Strategic Health Authorities of new 2005/26 revenue allocations and the 2005/06 allocations schedule.
