This document considers achievements since the publication of 'Modernising pathology services' and sets out a programme to speed up modernisation of pathology services shaped around patients' needs.

In February 2004, the Government launched 'Modernising pathology services', good practice guidance to the NHS on building better pathology services.

Much has already been achieved and this is set out in Annex A. However, more needs to be done in the context of new initiatives heralded by the NHS Improvement Plan.

This document:

  • sets out how together the Department of Health with the NHS can re-energise the modernisation programme
  • shows how the NHS can build a new service shaped around the patient and take forward the new technology and news ways of working agendas.

It also announces:

  • a radical independent review of pathology services to continue to drive the modernisation of the service, and
  • a project with the National Primary Care Development Team to gain a better understanding of clinical and organisational practice relating to pathology and to identify the key pathology issues in primary care.
