This report is about the appraisal of general medical practitioners. It provides a framework for developing workable arrangements that will benefit patients, the National Health Service and individual GPs. The Department of Health commissioned the School of Health and Related Research at Sheffield University (ScHARR) to prepare the framework on the basis of a brief research project which distilled the experience and views of Health Authorities (HAs), Primary Care Groups (PCGs), Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), the profession itself and a wide range of other interested bodies and individuals. ScHARR was also asked to 'import' the accumulated lessons learned from appraisal systems in other settings.
