This report from the Centre for Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) provides information for stakeholders about interprofessional education.

Interprofessional education (IPE) has been given increasing momentum as a result of NHS Plan commitments to:

  • Develop common learning programmes and core curricula for all professionals and staff in communications and NHS principles and organisation
  • Change workforce practices and develop new ways of working
  • Breakdown professional and organisational barriers to learning and working together through closer integration of health professional programmes

There are significant resource, capacity and cultural implications (within higher education and NHS) in moving from the current predominance of uni-professional education programmes to those that are primarily inter-professional. The emphasis on multi professional teams and clinical networks as the means of delivering a clear service driven agenda for change has major implications for education. Education programmes must respond more readily and flexibly and necessary changes in educational processes, in both classroom and practice settings, must be sustained, embedded and capable of widespread replication.

As a result a number of initiatives have been supported and funded, both nationally and locally, to take forward inter-professional and common learning in health professional education.
