There are significant resource, capacity and cultural implications (within higher education and NHS) in moving from the current predominance of uni-professional education programmes to those that are primarily inter-professional. The emphasis on multi professional teams and clinical networks as the means of delivering a clear service driven agenda for change has major implications for education. Education programmes must respond more readily and flexibly and necessary changes in educational processes, in both classroom and practice settings, must be sustained, embedded and capable of widespread replication.
As a result a number of initiatives have been supported and funded, both nationally and locally, to take forward inter-professional and common learning in health professional education.
