This statistical report complements an independent review of children’s palliative care services commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health.  

The report provides an analysis of mortality data and hospital admission data for children and young adults with conditions likely to require palliative care services in England, including information on:

  • recent trends in mortality
  • the prevalence amongst 0-19 year olds of conditions likely to require access to palliative care services
  • cause and place of death
  • hospital episodes for 0-19 year olds, including information on:
      - trends in finished consultant episodes
      - admission method
      - regional comparisons of admissions
      - inpatient expenditure by the NHS
