This report summarises progress against Department of Health mortality targets for 2010 in the following areas: Cancer (premature mortality rate); All Circulatory Diseases (premature mortality rate); Intentional Self-harm and Injury of Undetermined Intent; Accidents.

Key facts

Cancer
Three-year average rates have fallen for each period since the baseline, from 141.2 deaths per 100,000 population in 1995/6/7 to 117.0 deaths per 100,000 population in 2004/5/6, and are now 17.1% below the baseline rate. The milestone for 2004/5/6 has been passed and if the trend of the last ten years were to continue, and the target would be met.

All Circulatory Diseases
Three-year average rates have fallen for each period since the baseline, from 141.0 deaths per 100,000 population in 1995/6/7 to 84.2 deaths per 100,000 population in 2004/5/6, and are now 40.3% below the baseline rate. The minimum target requirement for 2009/10/11 has been met.

Intentional Self-harm and Injury of Undetermined Intent (‘Suicide’)
The three-year average rate rose in the period immediately following the setting of the baseline. However, the rate has since fallen and is now 10.0% below the baseline. In 1995/6/7 there were 9.2 deaths per 100,000 population, by 2004/5/6 the rate had fallen to 8.3 deaths per 100,000 population. The milestone for 2004/5/6 is for a fall of 12% from the baseline. Although there has been sustained progress towards the target, the rate of decline had slowed, and if this trend were to continue, the target would not be met. There are signs that the rate of decline may once again be increasing, an increased rate of decline must be sustained if the target is to be met.

Accidents
Three-year average rates are flat since the baseline period and are now 1.0% above the baseline rate. In 1995/6/7 there were 15.8 deaths per 100,000 population, in 2004/5/6 the rate was 15.9 deaths per 100,000 population. If the trend of the last ten years were to continue, the target would not be met.
