The latest monthly national statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting times produced by the Department of Health were released on 26th June 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting times figures for the month ending 31st May 2009 include data for England, Strategic Health Authorities, and NHS Trusts.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient waiting times

  • The number of patients, for whom English commissioners are responsible, waiting over the 26 weeks standard at the end of May 2009 was 22.
  • The number of patients, for whom English commissioners are responsible, waiting over 13 weeks at the end of May 2009 was 44,800, an increase of 2,400 (5.6%) from April 2009, and a rise of 4,700 (11.8%) from May 2008.

Outpatient waiting times

  • The number of patients, for whom English commissioners are responsible, waiting over the 13 weeks standard for a first outpatient appointment following GP referral at the end of May 2009 was 278.
  • The number of patients, for whom English commissioners are responsible, waiting over 8 weeks at the end of May 2009 was 63,1000, an increase of 19,700 (45.3%) from April 2009, and a rise of 35,300 (126.6%) from May 2008.
