This report was commissioned by the Department of Health to provide better and more reliable information about various aspects of people's health, and to monitor selected health targets. The population represented by this survey comprises those living in private households in England. The survey focused on respiratory disease and atopic conditions, disability and non-fatal accidents. For the first time in the series, questions were asked about fruit and vegetable consumption. The interview also included the question modules which are asked in most years in the Health Survey such as general health and longstanding illnesses, use of health services, cigarette smoking, psycho-social health and social support.
