The main purpose of this survey was to continue to monitor smoking, drinking and drug use among secondary school children aged 11-15. Information was obtained from 9,859 pupils in 321 schools throughout England during the autumn term of 2002.

The original report for 2002 preliminary results and published report were withdrawn and revised as errors were detected in the data. The errors were caused by the way that some of the derived variables were calculated; existing quality assurance procedures did not identify the errors at the time of publication, but have now been tightened up

The affected variables were: whether heard of, offered or taken "any" drugs (or any subgroup of drugs such as Class A drugs, but not these measures for specific drugs); the number of alcoholic units drunk of six different types of drinks in the last week and the overall units drunk in the last week.
