Introduction

The National Surveys of NHS Patients programme comprises a series of surveys designed to contribute to the monitoring of performance of the NHS as seen from the patient's perspective. The survey of cancer patients is the third in the series and was designed to assess the quality of care by hospital patients with one of six types of cancer namely breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Aims and background

This paper describes secondary analyses that were carried out on data from the National Surveys of NHS Cancer Patients, 2000-2001. The key objectives of the analyses were:

  • To identify questions that were related to each other and see if they could be grouped together into themes improve presentation of the data and to potentially simplify the questionnaires.
  • To identify questions that influenced/were related to people's confidence in the doctors and nurses, and questions related to the respect and dignity that patients felt they were given.

The analyses were based on 65,337 respondents from 172 hospital Trusts in England. This gave an average of 380 respondents per trust.
