The number of Practitioners (excluding GP Retainers)* in England rose on average by 1.4% per year between 1993 and 2003. In 2003, 39% of Practitioners (excluding GP Retainers) were female, compared with 29% in 1993. In 2003, 22% of Unrestricted Principals and Equivalents (UPEs)* worked part-time, compared with 10% in 1993. In September 2003, 35.3% of UPEs provided services through Personal Medical Services (PMS) arrangements.The number of GP Registrars increased to 2,235 in 2003, 46% higher than in 1993. The number of female GP Registrars has increased by 62% since 1993; 60% of GP Registrars are now female. UPEs had, on average, 5% fewer patients on their lists in 2003 than in 1993, although a greater proportion are working part time. The average list size per estimated whole-time equivalents (WTE) GPs decreased slightly between 1993 and 2003. The number of WTE practice staff increased by 28% between 1993 and 2003.
